A Proper Theology of the Old Testament
The prefix “Theo” means “GOD” and suffix “logy” means study of or branch of learning, so what we are going to be discussing is the study of GOD! Who would ever open a book on which they plan to learn from or gain a skill from and start at the end? Sadly too often this is just about the case with a lot of students of the bible. With all the splendor and praise that is in the book of Revelation so many people who are interested in the bible being there bible reading there! Yes I know at the very end of the bible. This would be whimsical if it were not such a tragedy.
Not knowing anything about the close of the first century history or anything about the Roman culture and not to mention never studying apocalyptic literature in the scriptures they (the novice) began to formulate opinions and even doctrines about the Word of God. Thus leading to an improper theology and possibly leading others astray.
I am postulating that if one is to have a proper view of the Almighty that individual is going to have to begin in what we know as the Old Testament. It has well been stated and proven that the Old Testament is the New Testament concealed and the New Testament is the Old Testament revealed. Therefore since the Old Testament is the foundation of the New Testament, understanding the O.T. is of utmost importance!
The Apostle Paul writes in Romans 15:3-4 For Christ also pleased not himself; but, as it is written, The reproaches of them that reproached thee fell upon me. For whatsoever things were written aforetime were written for our learning, that through patience and through comfort of the scriptures we might have hope.
Here the Apostle quotes from Old Testament in Psalms 69:9 For the zeal of thy house hath eaten me up; And the reproaches of them that reproach thee are fallen upon me. This what we know as a Messianic psalms. If one has never read the Old Testament or did a study of O.T. they will be woefully ignorant of how the scriptures all harmonize and work together. The individual will miss the detail, sacrifice, and Love that is involved in order for you and I to have salvation.
Too, the O.T. gives us a wonderful view of God! How HE created us in HIS image. We learn that we are free moral agents and that we like the angels 2 Peter 2:4 will be judged. We learn that God did not create evil but that evil occurs when we choose to rebel against the Divine rule! We also learn of God’s mercy (Gen.4:15) but strict judgement (Ex.34:7). How God gives everyone an opportunity to repent! We especially learn of HIS long-suffering (Gen.15:6) which is designed to lead us to repentance (2 Peter 3:9).
The Old Testament is a foundational stone for anyone who is serious about knowing God, obeying God, and Loving God. We don’t look to the Old Testament for our salvation or how to worship God even but we can learn of His character and how HE carefully devised a scheme to reconcile sinful man back unto HIMSELF! So if we are going to have a proper Theology we must begin at the beginning of the book (bible) which is Genesis (the beginning) no pun intended.
