How to respond when the conversation is negative?
Often times as Christians we encounter situations that are less than desirable. We may have a loved one who has a potty mouth. Just about every word that is uttered is a curse word or something that is worldly and not of a spiritual realm. We as Christians try to watch over our hearts with all diligence because we know from it flow the springs of life (Proverbs 4:23).
This is not always easily done, if we are not careful we can find ourselves falling back into the world from whence we have been called out of! The Apostle Paul inspired of the Holy Spirit said “evil communications corrupt good manners (1 Corinthians 15:33).
So how does the Christian handle these situations, how can we be victorious in this battle do we just give up and go along to get along? Surely not, I am going to suggest several different items that I believe that can help when situations like these arise.
- Talk about the grace of GOD! Remember that you obeyed the gospel, having been baptized into Christ and into his death resulting in the forgiveness of sins. As a result we are dead to sin and no longer live therein.
- Redirect conversation. When the conversation is not a Godly one and the person claims to be a God fearing individual then redirect the conversation into a spiritual one. You can say “I was reading______ and it made me think about______.
- Don’t add fuel to the fire. Often times we add fuel to the fire by laughing and going along with an unruly joke that is told. Then we find ourselves slipping back to the old man whom we crucified when we obeyed from the heart that form or pattern of doctrine which set us free from sin.
Let us strive for the mastery and give all diligence to make sure we are walking in the light as HE is in the Light. If we identify a situation and resolve in our minds not to be dragged down then we won’t give an occasion for the adversary to be successful rather we expose him for what he is (a liar) and help a weak or wayward Christian along the way!
