The Importance of Bible Reading
The Apostle Paul wrote in 1 Timothy 4:13 “Till I come, give heed to reading, to exhortation, to teaching.” Reading is a foundational block that often determines how far one will go in life and the life to come! In the history of America and across the pond as well their have been periods of time when the majority of people could not read. To try to accommodate for it they would teach by pictures.
Archaeologists have discovered various finding with bible stores carved on various materials to illustrate a biblical story! These are out found during a period when literacy was at its lowest. When Jesus would teach or be questioned He sometimes would reply back have you not read? Let us notice a few times in the scriptures in which our Lord asks the question.
Matthew 12:3 But he said unto them, Have ye not read what David did, when he was an hungred, and they that were with him;
Matthew 12:5 Or have ye not read in the law, how that on the sabbath days the priests in the temple profane the sabbath, and are blameless?
Matthew 19:4 And he answered and said unto them, Have ye not read, that he which made them at the beginning made them male and female,
You see God in HIS wisdom told HIS will to man and had man write it down and when he/she reads it, they will understand and are expected to do what HE has communicated. We see this clearly demonstrated in the scriptures below.
For this cause I Paul, the prisoner of Jesus Christ for you Gentiles, If you have heard of the dispensation of the grace of God which is given me toward you: How that by revelation he made known unto me the mystery; (as I wrote before in few words, By which, when you read, you may understand my knowledge in the mystery of Christ) (Ephesians 3:1-4).
For us to first know the will of God we must read it! Then we take that knowledge and apply it by encouraging and teaching others. I hope all of us here at Caddo Mills church of Christ are doing our daily bible reading and see the importance on daily bible reading. Truly what a blessing we have before each of us to be able to live in a society that allows us to read and to study the bible, God’s word freely!
